Product Overview
Trane Odyssey 10 Ton Two-Stage Commercial Split Air Conditioning System – 208/230V 3-Phase | R-454B
The Trane Odyssey 10-ton two-stage commercial split air conditioning system is the highest-capacity offering in the Odyssey lineup — built for large light commercial spaces where equipment reliability, part-load efficiency, and long-term operating cost are the dominant procurement criteria. Delivering 120,000 BTU of cooling capacity across two stages of operation, this system pairs a matched Trane TTA outdoor condensing unit with a TWE indoor air handler, achieving the strongest efficiency rating in the series at 11.3 EER and 14.1 IEER.
Configured for 208/230V 3-phase power and running on R-454B refrigerant, the Odyssey 10-ton system is engineered for the commercial electrical infrastructure standard in large retail, medical, office, and light industrial facilities — and built to meet current and emerging refrigerant compliance requirements without future retrofit exposure.
Note that this is a cooling-only split system. For applications requiring both heating and cooling at 10-ton capacity, contact us about the Odyssey heat pump series or supplemental heating options.
Two-Stage Capacity Control at 10 Tons
At 10-ton capacity, the case for two-stage operation is even stronger than at smaller sizes. Single-stage equipment at this capacity tier creates significant problems in real-world commercial operation:
- Short-cycling on mild days drives up compressor wear and reduces system lifespan
- Humidity problems from insufficient runtime at full load — the space cools to setpoint before adequate moisture removal occurs
- Temperature stratification in large open-plan spaces from infrequent, high-volume air delivery cycles
- Peak demand charges on commercial utility bills from repeated full-capacity compressor starts
Two-stage control addresses all four. First stage — typically 67–70% of full capacity — runs longer cycles at lower output, removing more moisture, distributing air more evenly, and avoiding the demand spikes of repeated full-capacity starts. Second stage engages only when the load genuinely requires it.
The 14.1 IEER rating reflects this real-world advantage — weighted part-load efficiency across 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% load conditions. At 10-ton capacity, the gap between EER (11.3) and IEER (14.1) represents meaningful annual energy cost savings in most commercial climates.
R-454B Next-Generation Refrigerant
At 10-ton capacity, refrigerant compliance carries greater financial weight than at smaller sizes — more refrigerant charge, higher retrofit cost, and greater service exposure as R-410A availability tightens under EPA phase-down. R-454B's GWP of 466 is approximately 78% lower than R-410A's 2,088, positioning this system for long-term compliance without equipment replacement or costly refrigerant conversion.
R-454B is classified A2L (mildly flammable) under ASHRAE 34. This system is engineered, listed, and labeled for compliant A2L refrigerant use per current UL, AHRI, and applicable building code standards. Installers should verify local AHJ requirements for A2L refrigerant in the specific occupancy type prior to installation.
Trane Odyssey Commercial Engineering
- Climatuff® Two-Stage Scroll Compressor: Factory-integrated two-stage capacity control on Trane's commercial-duty Climatuff scroll platform — not a field-added staging kit. Engineered for the continuous duty cycles of commercial operation, not residential peak-hour use patterns
- Spine Fin™ Outdoor Coil: Aluminum spine fin coil geometry delivers maximum heat transfer surface area in a compact footprint. Resists debris accumulation and maintains airflow efficiency across the coil's full service life — critical at 10-ton capacity where coil cleaning downtime carries real operational cost
- WeatherGuard™ Hardware: Stainless steel fasteners, UV-stabilized cabinet panels, and factory-applied coil coating for long-term outdoor durability in rooftop and ground-level commercial installations across a range of climates
- 3-Phase Power Distribution: Balanced three-phase load at 208/230V reduces electrical noise, enables properly sized circuit protection, and delivers smoother compressor starts and operation versus single-phase alternatives — particularly important at 10-ton capacity where inrush current on single-phase would be prohibitive
- TWE Multi-Positional Air Handler: Factory-installed expansion device simplifies field installation and supports multi-positional placement — horizontal, vertical, or upflow — to accommodate mechanical room constraints in larger commercial buildings

Professional Installation Recommended
Most HVAC equipment must be installed and connected by a licensed professional to remain safe, code-compliant, and eligible for manufacturer warranty coverage. If you're unsure about installation requirements, contact us before you order.
Make sure it is the right size, and that you have the rest of it
Most outdoor units ship alone. If you are not certain of the capacity, or of what has to go with this unit, these two will work it out with you.
